GR Crew Juniors 2014-15 Coaching Announcements

Joey Barone
We are very pleased to announce that Joey Barone will be returning to serve as club staff coach for the 2014-2015 year.
 
Along with his club staff role, Joey will oversee our goal scoring and finishing programs, camps, and clinics, and work specifically in this area of the game with our players and our U8 Academy. He will also be head coach for our U14 Boys Gold, U18 Girls Black, and U13 Girls Silver.

“Having been here since the inception of the club, I am proud how far we have come and look forward to continuing to contribute by serving as the Academy goal scoring coach and staff coach this year,” said Joey.

Joey played collegiate soccer at Calvin College, where he was an NCAA All-American in 1991 and set the record as the school’s all-time leading scorer. After his career at Calvin, he played in the PDL for nine seasons as a member of Kalamazoo Kingdom and West Michigan Edge.
 
He has been coaching youth soccer in West Michigan since 1995 for GRASA, Grand Valley Premier, Kalamazoo Kingdom, and GR Crew Juniors. He also was the head coach of the PDL West Michigan Edge franchise for two seasons. He is the founder and director of Barone Goal Scoring Academy.

Joey is a teacher in the Jenison school district. He has a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in Arts and Humanities.

Leo Garcia
We are excited to announce that Leo Garcia will be returning to serve as club staff coach for the 2014-2015 year.
 
Along with his club staff role he will oversee our growing Futsal program during the winter season and also be the head coach for our U11 Boys Gold, U11 Girls Gold, and U9 Girls Black teams.

“I am very excited continue working for the great club and to lead the futsal side of the club as this is a great development tool for young athletes,” said Leo.

He has been a member of the GR Crew Juniors coaching staff since 2009. He has also coached at PASS SC and was the boys varsity coach at Godfrey-Lee High School. He established the Garcia Futsal Academy in 2010.

Leo is currently the Coordinator and President of the Hispanic Women’s League of Grand Rapids.
 
He currently holds his USSF D license and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.

Paul McGuiness
We are excited to announce that Paul McGuinness will be returning to serve as club staff coach and head coach of our U10 Girls Gold, U11 Girls Silver, U15 Girls Black, and U16 Boys Black teams.

“I am excited and proud to work with and alongside many great coaches and players at Grand Rapids Crew Juniors. I look forward to another successful year with the club,” said Paul.

Paul currently holds his USSF B license and his NSCAA National Diploma.
 
He has served as a staff coach for Oakbank Sixth Form, Grayslake Galaxy, Green & White SC, Pegasus SC, and Hawks SC. He then became Boys Director at NorthStar SC before joining GR Crew Juniors.

Paul has a BSC Sports Science Degree with Applied Sports Studies.

James Gilpin
We are excited to announce that James Gilpin will be returning to serve as our Goalkeeping Director for the upcoming 2014-2015 year.
 
James will run our very successful and ever-improving goalkeeping program and implement his goalkeeping philosophy throughout goalkeepers in the club. He will also be the head coach of our U11 Boys Black, U17 Girls Black, and U17 Boys Black teams.

James currently holds his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and his English FA coaching license.
 
He has had playing stints with Celtic FC, Sunderland AFC, and Newcastle United and is currently assistant coach and goalkeeping coach for Davenport University Women’s Soccer. He is also a head coach at Camp Shutout Goalkeeping Camp.

James has worked for the last 4 years with the Crew helping improve and develop our goalkeepers and many of the top keepers in West Michigan.

Matt Roberts
We are very pleased to announce that Matt Roberts will serve as our Youth Director for the upcoming 2014-2015 year.
 
Matt will oversee and run our very successful Crew youth program for players aged 4 through 10.
 
Matt will also be the head coach for our U8 Boys Gold, U8 Boys Black, U9 Boys Gold, and U9 Boys Black teams.

Matt holds his NSCAA Regional, NSCAA Advanced Regional, and NSCAA National coaching diplomas. He is also an NSCAA Ambassador, a role which entails spreading passion and pride throughout the country.
 
He served two years as coach for the Forest Hills Eastern High School boys team, leading them to the state title game in 2005, and was subsequently named Michigan Public High School Coach of the Year. He then returned to his alma meter in 2006 to be the Assistant Men’s Coach at Aquinas College.

Lewis Robinson
We are excited to announce that Lewis Robinson will serve as our Girls Director of Coaching for the 2014/2015 year.
 
Lewis will oversee the girls side of the club along with being the head coach of our U13 Girls Gold, U14 Girls Gold, and U18 Boys Gold teams. He will also assistant coach our U16 Girls Gold and U18 Girls Gold.
 
Lewis is the director of our newly added Super Y program as we hope to offer a full club wide slate of Super Y teams in the next year.
 
“I am looking forward to another great year with this great club. We have a great staff here and a fantastic group of players. Our younger teams are full of talent and potential and I look forward to helping the club continue to develop these players and continue the club’s tradition of success.” said Lewis.

Lewis currently holds his USSF B License, English FA Level 1 license, and an MBA in Management.
 
He is currently the head women’s soccer coach at Grandville High School and our W20 summer team head coach. In his 5 years at the Crew Lewis has led his teams to two junior state championships, three state championships, two regional championships and two national championships.

Steve Herdsman
We are excited to announce that Steve Herdsman will serve as our Boys Director of Coaching for the 2014/2015 year.
 
Steve will serve and oversee the boys side of our club along with being head coach of our U15 Girls Gold, U13 Boys Gold, and U17 Boys Gold.
 
Steve will also run our Crew Sports Performance program and assist our U15 Boys Gold for the next year.

“I am very excited to continue working with this great organization and am looking forward to the new challenges next year and continuing the club’s great tradition of development and success.” Said Steve.

Steve played several years in the MLS with Colorado Rapids and the Columbus Crew and is currently the assistant men’s soccer coach at Cornerstone University.
 
He holds his USSF B license.

George Moni
We are pleased to announce George Moni as our Technical Director for the 2014/2015 year.
 
Along with his Technical Director role, George will be head coach of our U12 Girls Gold, U10 Boys Gold, U12 Boys Gold, U16 Girls Gold, and U16 Boys Gold for the next year.

“I am thrilled to be an integral part of the club and committed as always to improve the quality of soccer in West Michigan. I am proud of past achievements and excited to lead the way into the future with the Crew,” said George.
 
George holds his USSF A License, UEFA B License, and a NSCAA Premier Diploma.
 
He has been an ODP Head Coach and also coached at the collegiate level with Davenport University.
