Joey Barone

Joey BaroneJoey is the Head Coach of our U16 Premier Boys team, the Assistant Coach of the U13 Boys team, the Youth Academy Trainer, and the club’s shooting and finishing trainer. He is also the coach for the U12 boys.  The U16 team made it to the State Cup Final in 2011, and the U12 team came in first in the U13 Elite division.

Joey was a prolific scorer at Calvin College, where he was an NCAA All-American in 1991 and set the record as Calvin’s All-time Leading Scorer. He was also a pro player with the two PDL teams, West Michigan Edge and Kalamazoo Kingdom for nine years.

Joey’s coaching experience is varied and deep. He has coached soccer enthusiasts from the youth level up to the pro level with West Michigan Edge and the Kalamazoo Kingdom. He has coached many youth teams within Western Michigan, and GRCJ is fortunate to have him coaching and training our youth players.

Everyone who knows Joey knows what an outstanding trainer he is. He knows the game like no other and has a knack for teaching it. It makes perfect sense for Joey to develop our club’s players- starting with our U8’ers - and he will also train any Crew players who are interested in developing their goal-keeping and shooting skills.

Joey holds both a BA and a Masters Degree in Physical Education and Spanish, and is a teacher in the Jenison school district. While he is a teacher and a coach, he is also a father to four sons, who are following in their father’s footsteps. His two older twin sons, Domenico and Mark, former GRCJ players, were Big Ten champions with MSU.
